Chicago Bike Week concluded Friday morning with a bike to work rally in Daley Plaza. This week was part of the Bike Chicago 2015 plan to promote cycling as an environmentally friendly and healthy means of transportation.

Panel discusses CPS budget and current state of public education in Chicago

During a Thursday City Club of Chicago discussion on the current state of Chicago Public Schools, panelists discussed the many challenges facing the cash-strapped school system.

The panel included: Jitu Brown, organizer of the Kenwood Oakland Community Organization; Lauren FitzPatrick, education reporter for the Chicago Sun-Times; Sarah Karp, former deputy editor of  Catalyst Chicago; and Wendy Katten, director of Raise Your Hand, a parent-led coalition advocating on behalf of quality public education.

City Council passes Emanuel’s borrowing plan, Evans appointment as aviation commissioner

The Chicago City Council approved Mayor Emanuel’s $1.1 billion borrowing plan and the appointment of Ginger Evans as the new commissioner of the Chicago Department of Aviation on Wednesday.

Finance Committee chairman Ed Burke (14th) presented Emanuel’s borrowing ordinance to the full council, saying it was a needed step to improving the city’s financial health

Council committee approves funding, bus for program to bring fresh produce to food deserts

Members of the Chicago City Council Committee on Budget and Government Operations on Tuesday unanimously approved a proposal to provide funding and a bus to a program that helps make fresh produce available to residents of Chicago’s food deserts.

Q&A with the outgoing Daily Whale assistant editor Tom Butala

After working with the Daily Whale for 3.5 years, assistant editor Tom Butala will be moving abroad to explore new opportunities.

Butala graduated from DePaul University with a journalism degree in 2010. He worked as an assistant editor for a Chicago-based real estate agent trade publication before joining the Daily Whale as a staff reporter in February 2012.

Finance Committee approves Emanuel’s $1.1 billion borrowing plan

During a Chicago City Council Finance Committee meeting on Monday, aldermen approved Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s proposal to borrow $1.1 billion as part of a debt restructuring plan that will allow the city to convert short-term, variable-rate debt to long-term, fixed-rate debt.

State Sen. Kotowski calls for investment in Illinois residents, proposes solutions for budget gap

Sen. Dan Kotowski (D-Park Ridge) wrote a piece for Reboot Illinois on Wednesday advocating for the 2016 budget the Democratic-controlled state legislature approved in May. The budget currently awaits action from Gov. Bruce Rauner.

Cubs get approval for six outfield concession stands

The Commission on Chicago Landmarks’ Permit Review Committee on Thursday unanimously approved the installation of six new concession stands in the outfield bleachers at Wrigley Field. 

Recent renovations at the ballpark have expanded both the left and right field bleachers to include new upper decks. During Thursday’s meeting, representatives from the Chicago Cubs explained four of the six new concession stands will be positioned in the new upper bleacher decks under existing signage.

Bloomingdale Trail a reality thanks in large part to private contributors

The long-awaited Bloomingdale Trail and The 606 park system will officially open to the public on Saturday June 6 thanks in part to the help of several private contributors from the Chicago area.

Stretching from Humboldt Park to Bucktown, the 2.7 mile, elevated, multi-use pathway will offer separate lanes for runners and cyclists. Its features include art installations, an event plaza and an observatory. The trail also connects to five ground-level parks.
