Mayor Rahm Emanuel officially announced the appointment of Forrest Claypool as the new CEO of Chicago Public Schools on Thursday. Emanuel’s announcement comes three months after the mayor tapped Claypool to be his chief of staff.

The Illinois Finance Authority Board of Directors on Thursday approved $685 million in bond sales for five projects designed to spur economic development and create at least 690 jobs.

HUD secretary announces new rule to expand access to affordable living

Divvy to offer discounted memberships for low-income Chicagoans

Mayor Rahm Emanuel on Tuesday announced the Divvy bike sharing service will offer $5 annual memberships under a new program for low-income Chicago residents.

Chicagoans who do not have a credit or debit card and have household incomes below 300 percent of the federal poverty level will be eligible for the discounted memberships. Standard annual Divvy memberships are $75 and require the rider to register a credit or debit card.

Media incubator Stage 18 aims to keep entertainment jobs in Chicago

Stage 18, a non-profit media and filmmaking initiative, is partnering with Cinespace Chicago Studios to provide a shared work environment for local filmmakers and media enthusiasts to collaborate and develop their projects.

Cinespace is a 1.45 million square foot studio in the Lawndale neighborhood on the West Side of Chicago. Some of Cinespace’s current clients include the critically-acclaimed TV shows “Empire” and “Chicago Fire.”

Common Cause Illinois prepares for fall launch of Fair Elections campaign

An advisory question on the February 24 ballot asked Chicago voters if the city or state should reduce the influence of special interest money in elections by financing campaigns through small voter contributions and limited contributions from public funds. The question received a “yes” vote from 79 percent of voters after Common Cause Illinois’s Fair Elections campaign led the effort to get it on the ballot. Now the group is preparing to launch a campaign to turn the voter mandate into law.

State Board of Education chairman calls for support in helping students learn to read

While speaking to the City Club of Chicago on Tuesday, Illinois State Board of Education Chairman Rev. James Meeks called on members of the public to support the board’s goal of helping all students read at grade level by the time they leave third grade.
