With over 30 years of experience in community planning and real estate development, Mark Angelini was a natural choice for his role as president of Mercy Housing Lakefront.

Mercy Housing Lakefront, a division of Denver-based Mercy Housing Inc., is a nonprofit organization that develops and manages service-enriched affordable housing units for families, seniors, veterans, and chronically homeless individuals.

Special Olympics Celebrates Opening Ceremony

Special Olympics Chicago hosted the opening ceremony of its 47th annual spring games at Soldier Field Monday morning.  

Thousands of students, coaches and supporters from all over Chicago marched in the welcoming parade. Chicago White Sox pitcher Jeff Samardzija served as the honorary head coach and declared the official start of the games. The festivities included performances from the Jesse White Tumblers and the Ray Graham High School drum line.

Q+A with CCHHS Executive Director of Managed Care Steven Glass

As the executive director of managed care for the Cook County Health and Hospitals System, Steven Glass has overseen the implementation and expansion of CountyCare, a Medicaid expansion program the county launched in December 2012.

Since July 2014, the program has doubled its enrollment. CCHHS recently announced that, as of the beginning of April, CountyCare had exceeded its enrollment goals.

Jennifer Vollen-Katz admitted that she faces a difficult battle to reform Illinois’ criminal justice system in her role as interim executive director of the John Howard Association. There are nearly 49,000 people in the state’s overcrowded and underfunded prison system, and Vollen-Katz recently told the Daily Whale, “There is so much work to be done.”

Senate panelists debate Illinois budget, encourage bipartisan action

All four state senators who participated in the City Club of Chicago’s Tuesday bipartisan panel discussion on the Illinois’ finances stressed the need for bilateral cooperation on budget matters in the Legislature.

Sen. Pamela Althoff (R-McHenry) first offered praise of Gov. Bruce Rauner’s proposed budget for fiscal year 2016, saying the proposal was part of Rauner’s work to develop a bipartisan plan to address the state’s fiscal problems.

Mayoral challenger Garcia advocates for economic equality in Chicago

While speaking to an audience at the City Club of Chicago on Monday, Cook County Commissioner and Chicago mayoral candidate Jesus “Chuy” Garcia criticized policies he said are driving middle class families out of Chicago and contributing to economic inequality in the city.

Garcia began by citing a recent report released by the Brookings Institute which named Chicago as one of the 10 most unequal cities in the U.S.

Lewis outlines CTU’s ‘blueprint’ for Chicago

Chicago Teachers Union President Karen Lewis presented a progressive “blueprint” for Chicago’s future while speaking at Monday’s City Club of Chicago luncheon.

The plan Lewis presented included a number of steps aimed at creating a “just Chicago.” She explained the teacher’s union had devised the blueprint to help guide union leaders as they work to negotiate a new contract with the city. “Our new contract will reflect our values as educators,” Lewis said. “That is why today we are releasing a blueprint of a just Chicago, fighting for the city our students deserve.”

131 challenged candidates in Chicago elections, but only six off ballot so far

When the deadline for challenges to candidates’ nominating petitions for the February 2015 Chicago elections passed last week, 131 candidates faced complaints from persons seeking to boot them from the ballot. In the interim period, six candidates have withdrawn from various races, but questions remain about how the races will look in many Chicago wards.

Cardinal Francis George accepts Chicago’s highest honor

During its last meeting of 2014, the Chicago City Council bestowed the city’s Medal of Merit upon Cardinal Francis George. George stepped down from his position as Archbishop in November after serving 17 years in the post.

On Wednesday, George became the first person to receive the city’s highest honor in nearly a decade. The most recent prior recipient of the medal was James Hickey, who was awarded the Medal of Merit in 2004. Hickey was a U.S. Army Colonel from Chicago whose brigade aided in the capture of Saddam Hussein.
