Political strategist and Democratic pollster Stan Greenberg on Thursday argued changes in the make-up of the U.S. population and its belief systems have produced a “new American majority with different values.” 

Greenberg made the remarks at a City Club of Chicago event on Thursday. During the event, he spoke about observations he detailed in his recently-published book, “America Ascendant: A Revolutionary Nation’s Path to Addressing Its Deepest Problems and Leading the 21st Century.”

Emanuel says he will not resign

One day after firing Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy, Mayor Rahm Emanuel on Wednesday told reporters he will not be resigning.

The mayor’s comments came during POLITICO’s Illinois Playbook Breakfast at the Metropolitan Club. Reporters asked Emanuel if he is considering stepping down in response to widespread criticism he received in the wake of the Laquan McDonald video footage released last week.

CCHHS CEO: System continues transition to patient-centered healthcare

Cook County Health and Hospitals Chief Executive Officer Dr. John Jay Shannon on Monday said the Affordable Care Act has helped provide his system with the resources necessary to improve care and move to a patient-centered, anticipatory healthcare model.

While speaking at a City Club of Chicago event, Shannon said the implementation of the ACA has been a “game changer” for CCHHS. Pursuant to the ACA, the health system launched CountyCare in 2013. The no-cost managed care health plan has significantly reduced the number of uninsured patients CCHHS serves.

U.S. Sen. Roland Burris’s memoir recalls struggles, triumphs of long political career

Former U.S. Senator Roland Burris provides a detailed account of his groundbreaking political career in his recently-published memoir, “The Man Who Stood Up to Be Seated.”

Burris made Illinois history in 1978 when he became the first African American to be elected to a statewide office. He served as comptroller for 12 years and then was the first African American elected as Illinois attorney general. In 2008, Burris was appointed to replace then President-elect Barack Obama in the U.S. Senate.
