Council zoning committee OKs furniture gallery, charter school, senior housing facility

The City Council Committee on Zoning, Landmarks and Building Standards passed an ordinance Thursday that would allow for the transformation of the Three Arts Club, a Chicago landmark in the city’s Gold Coast neighborhood, into a furniture gallery and café.

Forest Preserve District and U of I partner for preserve restoration plan

The Cook County Forest Preserve District Board of Commissioners on Tuesday passed an intergovernmental agreement with the Prairie Research Institute of the University of Illinois for the development of a Natural and Cultural Resources Management Plan.

According to Arnold Randall, superintendent of the Cook County Forest Preserve District, the district will use “scientists and professionals who are in the environmental [and] ecological world to help us assess our ecological value and … help us to create an overarching plan for restoration.”

Chicago food truck operators face city restrictions, opposition from brick-and-mortar restaurants

After much debate over how mobile cuisine in Chicago would affect brick-and-mortar restaurants, food trucks are rolling down the city streets and are determined to stay.

The Chicago City Council enacted an ordinance last year that permitted the food truck industry to expand. A total of 120 food trucks now have licenses to serve food on the city’s streets, and 17 have received licenses to cook on board.

Chicago Transit Authority to eliminate 149 positions

The Chicago Transit Authority Board on Wednesday approved the elimination of 149 positions as part of an effort to save $13 million per year.

Of the positions eliminated, about 45 are currently vacant, according to CTA officials. Forty of the positions are filled by union employees, and each union worker will have the opportunity to apply for a different position or will be reassigned to another position. About 64 non-union employees affected by the cuts will be let go on Nov. 11.

Council committee endorses Brenna Berman as chief information officer

A Council committee on Tuesday unanimously approved the nomination of Brenna Berman as chief information officer and commissioner for the city’s Department of Innovation and Technology.

Berman plans to focus on city-wide planning and execution of an IT strategy that is centered on the needs of residents and the departments that serve them. Berman told committee members that her short-term goals include continuing the consolidation of IT services within the city to allow DoIT to maximize its resources and to ensure that the department’s funds are spent wisely.

Aldermen hold hearing on preventing human trafficking

The City Council Committees on Human Relations and Public Safety held a joint hearing on Wednesday to address concerns about the rising incidence of human trafficking in Chicago and to call attention to measures designed to prevent the practice.

Current law concerning human trafficking defines the victims as children involved in sex trade, adults age 18 or above who are forced or deceived into commercial sex acts and anyone forced into any form of labor or services.

Committee advances agreement for perishable cargo center at O’Hare

An agreement with Chicago Perishable Center, LLC for development and financing of a perishable cargo center at O’Hare International Airport advanced through the City Council Committee on Aviation Monday.
