City Council License Committee takes action to deter illegal towing practices

The City Council Committee on License and Consumer Protection passed an ordinance on Wednesday intended to deter towing companies from illegally relocating vehicles parked on private property.

The ordinance requires towing companies to take at least one picture of unauthorized vehicles parked on private property prior to towing those vehicles. Towing companies would have to make those photographs available to vehicle owners. The photographs will have to clearly show the date and the time, the entire vehicle, the location and the license plate. 

City Colleges of Chicago approves amendment to contract for new labor management system

The City Colleges of Chicago Board on Thursday approved a $360,000 addition to its contract with Workforce Software Inc., which is providing equipment and services for CCC’s new time and labor management system.

New Bus Tracker SMS provider, continued use of Evanston telecom center approved by CTA Board

The Chicago Transit Authority Board on Wednesday approved an $864,000 contract with TextMarks Inc., which will provide text messaging services for the CTA’s Bus Tracker texting system.

TextMarks’ bulk SMS messaging platform is also used by businesses like Microsoft and Little Caesars. Its contract with the CTA begins on Jan. 1 and runs through Dec. 31, 2016.

City Council committee approves 43 night games at Wrigley Field

The City Council Committee on License and Consumer Protection passed an ordinance Wednesday allowing the Chicago Cubs to hold up to 43 regular season night games next baseball season.

The amended legislation permits the Cubs to schedule 35 night games and allows the team to move up to eight scheduled day games to nighttime starts in order to meet Major League Baseball's television broadcast obligations. The measure would not allow the city to veto the team’s choices for the rescheduled night games, unlike an ordinance approved previously by the City Council.

McPier awards management-consultant contract for Hyatt Regency Hotel

The Metropolitan Pier and Exposition Authority Board awarded on Tuesday a five-year, $1.36 million contract to Capital Hotel Management LLC for asset management consulting services related to the Hyatt Regency hotel near McCormick Place.

RTA Board approves final Metra settlement audit report, begins to look for ways to recoup settlement money

Regional Transportation Authority Board members on Wednesday signed off on the agency’s final audit of Metra’s settlement with former Metra CEO Alex Clifford. According to testimony at Wednesday’s meeting, the agencies will now focus on how to offset payments to Clifford.

Clifford resigned in June pursuant to a severance agreement worth up to $871,000. Metra approved the agreement to avoid a potential lawsuit that the former CEO had threatened to file against the agency.

Illinois Finance Authority approves loans for Lincoln Park Zoo expansion

The Illinois Finance Authority on Thursday approved the issuance of $30 million in bonds to cover the costs of the Lincoln Park Zoological Society’s construction of new habitats and the expansion of its education center.

According to IFA documents, the Zoological Society is a nonprofit organization that was established in 1959.

Chicago Transit Authority approves $1.38B 2014 budget

The Chicago Transit Authority Board unanimously approved on Wednesday a $1.38 billion budget for 2014 that preserves services and includes no transit fare increases.

In 2014, the CTA plans to undertake the $240 million expansion of the the Red Line's 95th/Dan Ryan station, a $203 million renovation of the Wilson Red Line station, and the construction of a new Green Line station at Cermak/McCormick.

CIT discusses potential agreement with Piper Jaffray to finance Retrofit One project

The Chicago Infrastructure Trust Board of Directors on Wednesday discussed plans to hire Piper Jaffray as the placement agent for the Retrofit One energy savings project. In that role, the company would help finance $27.5 million in energy efficiency upgrades of city buildings.

Council committee approves property tax break for Independent Mechanical Industries

The City Council Committee on Economic, Capital and Technology Development on Monday approved the extension of a property tax break for Independent Mechanical Industries that could allow the company to save over $1 million in real estate taxes over a 12-year period at their current location in the Knox Industrial Corridor in Portage Park.
