CPS lays off over 850 teachers, staffers

As Chicago Public Schools faces a looming $1 billion budget shortfall for the fiscal year beginning on July 1, the district on Friday revealed it will lay off over 850 teachers and staffers.

The district announced that 420 teachers, 100 teaching assistants and 133 other employees at the 50 Chicago Public Schools slated for closure were let go, according to DNAinfo Chicago. CPS also laid off 192 teachers and staff members at schools chosen for “turnaround” this year.
