Panel passes zoning changes for Hyde Park tower, new British School of Chicago, Malcolm X College

The city’s zoning committee on Monday approved the rezoning of 1330 East 53rd St. in Hyde Park to allow for the development of Vue 53, a 13-story mixed-use tower that is planned to contain 30,000 square feet of retail space, 267 dwelling units and 218 parking spaces.

City Council committee approves new food truck locations

Food trucks would operate from nine new areas in the city under a measure approved by the City Council Committee on Pedestrian and Traffic Safety on Monday. The measure would increase the number of designated food truck locations in the city to 30.

Food trucks would be able to prepare and serve food on board while parked in any of the proposed locations for up to two hours. The city already has 21 designated food truck areas, and food trucks are also allowed to park in any legal metered parking space that is at least 200 feet from a brick-and-mortar restaurant.

A tax break that cleared a City Council committee last week would let Fox Motors move one of its Ford dealerships to the Near North Side while saving an estimated 50 percent on their Cook County property tax payments over the next 12 years.

The City Council Committee on Economic, Capital and Technology Development approved Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s proposal to provide the Michigan based company with Class 7(b) tax status so it can relocate its dealership from 2401 S. Michigan Ave. to 2450 N. Elston Avenue.

As vote on parking meter agreement nears, some aldermen still hope for a buyback option

Aldermen from the Committee on Finance spent another day going over the fine print of the city’s renegotiated parking meter lease agreement.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel brokered the changes to the deal between the city and Chicago Parking Meters LLC for the operation of Chicago’s parking meter system. Those changes affect how the city and the company collect meter data as well as when and where drivers are charged for parking.

CountyCare enrollment on target, but questions remain

The state legislature this Tuesday moved to expand Medicaid eligibility in Illinois, effective Jan. 1, 2014, under the landmark federal Affordable Care Act.

Cook County has already initiated 55,000 applications to its CountyCare program for patients newly eligible for Medicaid as a result of federal health care reform. A waiver the county received from the federal government last October allowed the health system to begin enrolling patients in the CountyCare pilot program before the ACA takes effect in January.

Revised bed bug ordinance moves to City Council

A joint City Council committee endorsed on Thursday a revised version of an ordinance to comprehensively regulate bed bug extermination procedures.

The measure passed unanimously after less than a minute of discussion, even though the joint Committee on Housing & Real Estate and Health & Environmental Protection tabled a similar ordinance one month earlier. At the earlier meeting, aldermen said that some landlords could be unfairly burdened by the new pest control management and extermination requirements.

Ordinance protecting tenants of foreclosed buildings receives committee approval

An ordinance requiring banks to pay relocation fees to residents they evicted from foreclosed properties was approved by the city’s Committee on Housing and Real Estate on Thursday.

Sponsored by Ald. Dick Mell (33rd), the “Keep Chicago Renting" ordinance requires banks and individual buyers who take possession of property through foreclosure to pay evicted tenants $10,600 to cover relocation expenses.
