Cook County Board to consider resolution on heroin overdose drug

Cook County Board members on Wednesday are scheduled to vote on a resolution urging county law enforcement officials and first responders to carry naloxone, a drug that is used to prevent death in instances of heroin and other opioid overdoses.

Senate President Cullerton: Rauner’s budget plan is ‘not pretty’

Illinois Senate President John Cullerton (D-Chicago) on Monday said the affect Gov. Bruce Rauner’s proposed 2016 budget will have on the state is “not pretty.”

Rauner proposed decreasing funding for public transportation, Medicaid and local government as he aims to close the state’s $6.2 billion structural budget deficit.

While speaking at a City Club of Chicago event on Monday, Cullerton said the governor’s plans attempt to create fiscal stability at the expense of working-class families.

Money flowing into several aldermanic campaigns headed for runoffs

It has only been 10 days since Chicago’s Feb. 24 elections, but many candidates have already reported significant fundraising as they prepare for the April 7 runoff elections.

John Garrido has reported the most fundraising activity since Election Day. Garrido, who is challenging incumbent Alderman John Arena in the 45th Ward, reported $34,190 in contributions since Feb. 27. Of that total, Garrido himself contributed $27,690.

City Colleges launches new online student portal

City Colleges of Chicago on Wednesday launched a new version of its online student portal, replacing a convoluted PeopleSoft system with a more intuitive Campus Solutions interface.

City Colleges’ IT team spent 18 months developing the new online portal. The portal features an improved layout, automated degree audits, streamlined tuition and fee listings, and online enrollment and degree planning.

Ald. Mell still safe from runoff – for now; Meegan files lawsuit

According to the latest count of absentee ballots, incumbent Deb Mell has extended her lead in the race for 33rd Ward alderman and remains above the threshold necessary to avoid a runoff.

The Chicago Board of Elections on Tuesday released the results of its most up-to-date count of absentee ballots. According to the board, Mell has received 4,092 votes, 13 more than necessary to win outright.

CDOT driving forward with ‘Loop Link,’ Washington/Wabash 'L' station work

On March 16, the Chicago Department of Transportation will begin work on projects that will bring faster Chicago Transit Authority bus service and a new CTA “L” station to downtown.

The $32 million “Loop Link” – also known as Central Loop Bus Rapid Transit – initiative will expedite downtown bus travel on six pre-existing CTA routes. Under the project, CTA will install dedicated bus lanes on Madison, Washington, Canal and Clinton streets, according to CDOT Commissioner Rebekah Scheinfeld. The construction project is expected to conclude later this year.

Q+A with 2nd Ward aldermanic candidate Brian Hopkins

For Brian Hopkins, the five weeks that remain before Chicago’s runoff elections are “a relatively short period of time.”

After beginning his campaign to represent Chicago’s redrawn 2nd Ward two years ago, Hopkins now faces attorney Alyx Pattison in the April 7 runoff election. He won 29 percent of the vote in a six-way race in the city’s Feb. 24 election, and Pattison finished with 24.2 percent.
