Mayor announces official start of Chicago Ideas Week’s ThinkChicago program

Mayor Rahm Emanuel on Thursday announced the start of the fifth annual ThinkChicago program, which is part of Chicago Ideas Week. The three-day ThinkChicago event provides university students an opportunity to participate in a variety of activities highlighting the city’s computer science and technology career opportunities.

Cook County 2016 budget plan expands amusement tax

While presenting her $4 billion proposed budget for 2016 on Wednesday, Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle called for an expansion of the county’s 3 percent amusement tax to include cable TV, ticket resellers and some recreational activities. Preckwinkle said the move would generate $20.25 million in additional revenue for the county next year and prevent the county from having to raise its current amusement tax rate.

Alderman Roderick Sawyer was first elected to represent the 6th Ward on the Chicago City Council in 2011, when he upset the incumbent Freddrenna Lyle by 104 votes. After winning re-election this year, Sawyer was tapped to serve as chairman of the City Council’s Black Caucus in May. The alderman told the Daily Whale the additional responsibilities of leading the caucus have made his second term “busy and interesting.”

Chicago Community Trust presents new vision, establishes expanded grants for nonprofits

While celebrating its centennial anniversary on Wednesday, the Chicago Community Trust presented a new strategic plan for the future designed to inspire Chicagoans to engage in philanthropy and effect positive changes in their communities.

“We have been hard at work to craft a new vision for the Trust to ensure that this institution remains relevant, innovative and influential as we begin a new century,” Chicago Community Trust President & CEO Terry Mazany said. He added the new vision includes a focus on economic issues, social equity and youth development.

County Board approves creation of Cook-Chicago heroin task force

During a meeting of the Cook County Board of Commissioners’ Human Relations Committee on Wednesday, commissioners approved a resolution calling for the establishment of a joint anti-heroin task force between the city of Chicago and Cook County.

City Colleges of Chicago announces expansion of scholarship for students seeking four-year degrees

Mayor Rahm Emanuel and City Colleges of Chicago Chancellor Cheryl Hyman on Tuesday announced six colleges throughout the region have agreed to participate in a scholarship program to help CCC graduates earn four-year degrees.

ComEd CEO: Smart grid meter installation halfway complete

ComEd President and CEO Anne Pramaggiore on Monday said her company has completed about half of its planned smart meter installations, which are part of the lager smart grid program, and the utility company is on track to have the rest of the meters operational by 2018.
