Judge approves Water Reclamation District’s flood plan

A federal judge signed off Monday on an agreement between the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago and federal and state environmental officials, effectively green lighting MWRD’s massive plan to prevent flooding and water contamination in its 883-square-mile jurisdiction.

The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District Board on Thursday unanimously approved a measure that will moderately increase water treatment fees for the district’s large commercial-industrial and tax exempt clients next year.

Under the ordinance, both tax-exempt and large commercial-industrial users will be charged $246.08 per million gallons of liquid treated by the MWRD, according to the ordinance. The fee for tax-exempt and large commercial-industrial users this year is $241.73 per million gallons.

As part of its ongoing effort to protect Cook County homes and businesses from flood damage and keep the region’s waterways free of raw sewage, the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District announced it is close to completing excavation efforts on the second of three planned reservoirs under its Tunnel and Reservoir Plan.

Despite low prices and rebate opportunities, the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago has seen a marked decline in rain barrel sales over the past three years.

Used to collect and reuse rainwater from rooftops, the MWRD’s repurposed, 55-gallon plastic barrels go for $58 per unit, plus tax (prices for barrels bought commercially can range from $70 to $500). Before being appointed executive director of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago in June of 2011, David St. Pierre had over two-and-a-half decades of experience in the “water world.” St. Pierre had spent time as operations director for the Metropolitan St. Louis, Missouri Sewer District and then as deputy commissioner of the Department of Watershed Management in Atlanta.

Plans move forward for Albany Park flood-control project

The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago will chip in half of the money needed to build a tunnel designed to prevent flooding in the city’s Albany Park neighborhood.

The water district’s Board of Commissioners green-lighted Thursday a $24.7 million payment to the City of Chicago for the design and construction of the underground diversion tunnel. The city will match the MWRD’s contribution for the construction of the tunnel.
