Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle was in Springfield Thursday to push pension legislation that a key union fiercely objected to at Wednesday’s Cook County Board meeting.

Preckwinkle told reporters after the board meeting that she planned to talk with House and Senate Democratic and Republican leaders to drum up support for a bill expected to fully fund the county’s public worker pension system by 2034.

Preckwinkle names new county IT chief

Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle announced Monday the appointment of the county’s new tech chief.

Effective immediately, Simona Rollinson will serve as Cook County’s chief information officer, according to a press release from Preckwinkle’s office.

Preckwinkle charged Rollinson with spearheading a number of initiatives in her new role, including the launch of a new county payroll system, streamlining the information technology of the county’s criminal justice system and updates to broadband infrastructure.

Dart: pay attention to troubled suburbs

Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart exhorted City Club of Chicago attendees Thursday to pay more attention to “distressed” suburbs such as Harvey, Robbins, and Ford Heights where some residents cannot rely on their local police force to keep them safe.

“Law enforcement is marginal at best, at times corrupt, and at the end of the day does not provide any type of justice,” Dart said of these communities.

The Cook County Board of Commissioners Wednesday unanimously passed an ordinance banning pet stores in Cook County from selling dogs, cats, and rabbits from most for-profit breeders.

Authored by Commissioner John Fritchey (D-Chicago), the measure builds on a law the Chicago City Council adopted in March that bans for-profit breeders – which many ordinance supporters derisively refer to as “puppy mills” – from supplying animals to city pet stores.

Cook County’s Alvarez focuses on domestic violence, Chicago gang crackdown

Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez announced a new, consolidated unit of her office Tuesday that will handle sexual assault, domestic violence, and cases involving sexual and Internet crimes against children. The announcement came during a City Club of Chicago speech. Alvarez also pointed to her office’s success taking on Chicago gangs and overturning wrongful convictions, but she bemoaned county budget cuts that have reduced the office’s resources.

Forest Preserve Capital Improvement projects set to break ground

The Forest Preserve District of Cook County is moving forward with several projects in its $139 million Five-Year Capital Improvement Plan. At Tuesday’s meeting of the Forest Preserve District’s board, commissioners approved contract amendments for the architectural design of two building projects that have grown in scope since the board first approved them last year.
