McCarthy credits CPD initiatives for crime drops, calls for stricter state gun laws

During a speech at the City Club of Chicago on Wednesday, Chicago Police Department Superintendent Garry McCarthy highlighted efforts he said have helped reduce crime and murders in the city but stressed the need for stricter statewide gun laws to help Chicago battle a recent rise in shootings.

All Chicago Police districts saw overall crime rate reductions in 2013 of between 8 and 24 percent, a drop McCarthy attributes to specialized tactics adopted by the CPD under his command.
