The Chicago Housing Authority has successfully lowered their number of vacant public housing units, exceeding a goal set by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. CHA CEO Charles Woodyard reported on the agency’s success during its monthly board meeting on Tuesday.

CHA board tentatively approves Robert Taylor, Harold Ickes land deals

The Chicago Housing Authority board voted on Tuesday to submit for federal approval two land swaps involving demolished public housing developments.

One transaction endorsed Tuesday would allow the CHA to sell part of the former Robert Taylor homes at 51st and State streets to Chicago-based XS Tennis, Inc. for construction of a tennis training and retail complex. Board members also green lighted conveyance of the former Harold Ickes homes at 23rd and Federal streets to the City of Chicago, so the city may build a track and field facility for Jones High School.

CHA teens learn to code

The Chicago Housing Authority on Tuesday kicked off a six-week class at the Illinois Institute of Technology that will teach computer coding to 20 high school students who live in public housing.

The program is part of an effort by CHA to participate in the larger “Summer of Learning” initiative put forth by Mayor Rahm Emanuel. It is also an opportunity for the housing authority to start partnering with higher education institutions.

“This is a college prep program,” explained CHA spokeswoman Cassandra Thiem. “We are trying to grow partnerships.”

The Chicago Housing Authority’s new strategic plan envisions a bright future for public housing in the city, but some residents wonder if the agency is just replacing old promises with new ones.

Officially adopted at CHA’s Board of Commissioners meeting on Tuesday, the initiative, dubbed the “Plan Forward: Communities that Work,” marks the next step in the agency’s vision for public housing in Chicago.
