Teamwork makes the dream work

Gov. Pat Quinn joined rapper Common and former NBC basketball star Earvin “Magic” Johnson Wednesday at the Magic Johnson Bridgescape Academy in Lawndale to announce the launch of Johnson’s new Friends of Magic organization. Associated Press reporter Sophia Tareen tweeted a shot of the trio. Johnson’s organization aims to provide educational resources and assistance to at-risk high school students through a coalition of foundations and companies.

Going once … gone

Just as the bidding in the federal auction of 13 personal items purchased by former Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr. with campaign funds was starting to heat up, it appears the auction has come to a halt. According to ABC Chicago, the U.S. Marshals Service cancelled the auction after someone expressed “legitimate” concerns about the authenticity of a guitar signed by rock star Eddie Van Halen. U.S. Marshals will conduct a review of all the items and possibly repost some for bidding at a later time.

Uptown Sonic

Sonic Corp., the Oklahoma City-based operator of the Sonic Drive-in chain, is set to open its first Chicago restaurant, according to the Chicago Tribune. Sonic is set to break ground at Wilson Avenue and Sheridan Road in the Uptown neighborhood on Oct. 1.

The second installment of the contemporary art exhibit Expo Chicago kicked off last night and runs through Sunday. For those still on the fence about stopping by Navy Pier to take in the show this weekend, Chicago Tribune has a list designed to make you say “why not?”
