Raising awareness

Chicago Park District’s Soldier Field and Buckingham Fountain are two of almost 200 Chicago structures that are sporting the color pink during October in recognition of breast cancer awareness month, according to Digital Journal. Other notable Chicago landmarks “going pink” this month in support of the cause are the Willis Tower, the John Hancock Building and the Merchandise Mart.

Class prez

City Colleges of Chicago posted on its Tumblr yesterday a Q+A segment with Jauwan Hall, a Marine Corps veteran of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars and the SGA president of Kennedy-King College. In addition to his full class schedule, Hall is currently interning with the Security and Exchange Commission and hopes to become a corporate lawyer after transferring to the University of Illinois at Chicago.

To good health

Chicago Public Schools’ LaSalle II Magnet Elementary School hosted its Third Annual Healthy Family Fest in Wicker Park on Sunday. Participants kicked off the day with a half-mile fun run and then had opportunities to take mini-classes in martial arts, yoga and other subjects. Attendees also enjoyed smoothies from Lizzie’s Bake Shoppe. Local Alderman Proco “Joe” Moreno tweeted an image of the run.

Fired up

The Great Chicago Fire of 1871 began 142 years ago today behind a barn near what is now Halsted and 12th streets.  In remembrance, the Chicago Tribune today published a photo gallery depicting the aftermath of the tragedy. The fire left 90,000 Chicagoans homeless and led to a subsequent transformation of the city.

Time flies

Huffington Post Chicago published Windy City Nights today, a time-lapse video filmed by photographer Max Wilson. Scenes in the breathtaking video, which Wilson began filming in April of 2012, include shots of the Cloud Gate sculpture in Millennium Park, the city’s skyline and boats circling on Lake Michigan near Navy Pier under a barrage of fireworks.
