A summer job

DNAinfo on Tuesday profiled Richard Vargas, a physical education teacher at Chicago Public Schools’ Morrill School who has been occupying his summer downtime by selling ice cream.

“It’s gorgeous out here,” Vargas said, sitting at his ice cream cart at North Avenue Beach. “I get to meet new people; the people in Chicago are great and very friendly.”

The fests continue

Another weekend is here, and that means it’s time for more street festivals.

A number of fests are planned for this weekend, including: Saturday and Sunday’s Wicker Park Fest on Milwaukee Avenue between Paulina Street and North Avenue; the Taste of Lincoln, at the intersection of Lincoln and Fullerton avenues in Lincoln Park; the Samuel Adams Brew & View, Friday at Montrose Harbor in Lincoln Park; and Jeff Fest, Friday through Sunday at Jefferson Park.

Behind the buckets

Twin brothers and aspiring filmmakers from the city’s South Side have launched an online fundraiser to help fund their documentary of the “bucket boys,” who for years have been drumming away outside of city sporting and music events.

Jerome and Jarrell Lucas are almost 75 percent done with their 90-minute documentary “Bucket,” DNAinfo.com reported. The two have launched a Kickstarter campaign with the goal of raising $25,000 by Aug. 19 to help them complete the film.

Launched at the beginning of the month, 35 contributors so far have pledged $1,705 to the cause.

A forward thinking candidate

The Chicago Reader this week interviewed Robert Shaw – former alderman, mayoral candidate and … fortune teller?

While speaking with the Reader’s Ben Joravsky, Shaw predicted Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle – who many considered Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s most formidable potential challenger – would not run for election. Joravsky then received word just minutes later that Preckwinkle in fact would not run.

“I must be a political genius,” Shaw said of the news.
