Hometown heroes

The city has scheduled a welcome-home parade for the Jackie Robinson West All Stars on Wednesday.

The parade’s time and route will be announced early next week, the Chicago Tribune reported. The all-star team that includes 11- and 12-year-olds from the city’s South Side will play Nevada in the U.S. championship at 2:30 p.m. Saturday. They eliminated the Pennsylvania team last night, according to the Trib.

“[The JRW All Stars] continue to bring out the best in people as neighborhoods throughout the city have come together to support these kids,” Mayor Rahm Emanuel stated. “I can't wait to root for them in the United States championship game on Saturday, but regardless of the outcome, they have already won the hearts of an entire city."

Divvy on display

This weekend’s 2014 Transamerica Chicago Triathlon will feature 100 participants on Divvy bikes.

One hundred participants in Saturday’s SuperSprint event at Montrose Beach will bike 10 kilometers on Divvy bikes as part of the Divvy Wave, according to the Mayor’s Office. Divvy Wave participants will start the triathlon at 7:12 a.m. with a 375-meter swim, and will also run 2.5 kilometers.

“We’re excited to introduce the new Divvy Wave and break down the barriers to entry that triathlons normally face,” Transamerica Chicago Triathlon Regional Marketing Manager Scott Hutmacher stated. “Equipment, including tri bikes, can be expensive, especially for first time triathletes who are not quite ready to make such significant investments.”

This weekend in festivals…

It may be late August, but Chicago’s summer street-festival scene is still going strong.

Festivals scheduled for this weekend include: Bash on Wabash, 12 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday on Wabash Avenue between 13th and 14th place in the South Loop; Chicago’s New Orleans Festival, 12 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday at the intersection of Division Street and Damen Avenue in Wicker Park; and the Taste of Greektown, 12 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday at the intersection of Halsted and Division streets.
