As the City Council approved an ordinance increasing Chicago’s minimum wage on Tuesday, state lawmakers worked to reach a compromise before the end of the fall veto session on a proposal to elevate the minimum wage throughout the state.
Chicago aldermen voted 44-5 during a special session on Tuesday to approve a minimum wage increase sponsored by Mayor Rahm Emanuel. The measure mandates that the city’s wage be gradually elevated from the statewide rate of $8.25 per hour to $13 per hour by 2019.
