Walgreens joins Spike Lee, St. Sabina in sponsoring peace photography contest

Walgreens will partner with film director Spike Lee and St. Sabina Church in sponsoring a peace photography competition for Chicago youth, Rev. Michael Pfleger said Sunday while speaking at the South Side church.

Last week the Sun Times’ Michael Sneed reported Deerfield-based Walgreens will donate 300 disposable cameras for children to use to capture “images of peace” from around the city. Organizers hope the contest will draw attention away from violence. Lee will help judge the photography contest.

According to Sneed’s report, five winners will be announced at on Sept. 17 at Saint Sabina’s NBA peace basketball tournament. The winners will receive $500. Pfleger told Sneed the tournament will feature appearances by Chicago Bulls star Joakim Noah and Milwaukee Bucks forward and Chicago native Jabari Parker.

This is not the first time Walgreens has worked with Saint Sabina and Rev. Pfleger, according to Jim Graham, senior manager of corporate media relations at Walgreens.

“We have worked in recent years with Fr. Pfleger on a number of projects such as free health tests in the St. Sabina community,” Graham explained to the Daily Whale. “When he called to request cameras for his contest, we were happy to give him our support.”
