Lightfoot and Angelo to appear on Chicago Tonight

Lori Lightfoot, chairwoman of Chicago's Police Accountability Task Force, and Fraternal Order of Police President Dean Angelo are scheduled to appear on WTTW’s Chicago Tonight Monday evening. The pair are expected to discuss a report the task force released last month entitled “Recommendations for Reform:  Restoring Trust between the Chicago Police and the Communities They Serve.”

While acknowledging that policing is an increasingly dangerous job, the authors of the report argued systemic racism and other problems in the police force have led to a broken system that is in need of drastic changes. The task force’s recommendations included replacing the Independent Police Review Authority (IRPA) with a civilian police investigative agency, creating a dedicated inspector general for public safety, reforming officer training, and reinvigorating community policing programs.

Angelo previously called the report “biased” and said it will negatively impact police morale.  In a letter to WTTW defending the report, Lightfoot stated Angelo “miss[ed] the mark” in his analysis of the report.

Tune in to Monday’s discussion – it should be a good one.
